Hello all!

I have been a long time VW Beetle fan, since I was a kid.

While I don't own one right now, I am casually keeping my eyes open for a low priced, decent condition one to buy.

No problem. I am kind of debating whether or not to get a Beetle. If I get one, I want an autostick because... well, I foresee problems with me and a clutch. I once drove a full manual a few blocks and back and to put it simply, it's not for me.

I am soon buying a home so I will be getting the tax credit and I'm already planning how to spend it before I even have the house. *lol* But anyhow, I also want to get a good mileage pickup (22+mpg). I have a good mpg car right now (91 corolla, about 28-30 hwy depending on how fast I go..) but the car just doesn't suit me. I got it from my mom when I sold her the car I previously had and I took her old car as a partial trade.

I might be able to swing getting both (Beetle+pickup) but then I'm wondering if I can afford insurance on two autos (plus my motorcycle which is staying regardless).

The fun side of me is saying "get a classic Beetle, you've always wanted one!!" but the serious side of me is saying "get a good mileage pickup, you know you need it for hauling! You already have the motorcycle for fun!". And then I also have a third side.. the frugal side of me saying "Just keep the Corolla and just put a hitch on it to pull the utility trailer..." (..that I already have). UGH!! Mad

I can't back a trailer to save my life otherwise I'd just get a Beetle, put a hitch on it and be done with the debate. Rolling Eyes

Well not really because then my frugal side would probably win since I'd put a hitch on the Corolla for $128 vs buying a pickup for probably $2000-3000. Confused

Have you ever thought about getting a square back. I am not sure how much room you need but you could fit a lot in the back

What about a Type 2 Pickup.......... It's Vw......... It's rated at 1 ton....... and you can still get 20mpg out of it..... It will pull a trailer too....

The Samba has many of these out there for decent prices......... some are high but some can be had for much cheaper...

One of our members has a '72 pickup he's working on which he found local really cheap.... Cool

Look in here.... http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/cat.php?id=7

I had a Taurus wagon at one point and while it could hold a good amount of smaller cargo and get 23 hwy mpg, it just wasn't quite what I wanted.

If I end up buying a VW, it will be a classic Beetle. That's really the only VW I'm interested in owning... except for maybe a Karmann Ghia. Wink I had offered to trade tha Taurus I had for a Ghia but the guy didn't want a wagon (despite wanting a vehicle for his growing family), but admitted it was a good trade offer. Oh well, I sold the it to my mom who is quite happy with it.

I did end up putting a hitch on the Corolla I have for very light hauling with a light trailer I already have so I don't really need a pickup at this point,

Well, I don't need a VW either.. Rolling Eyes

It's not about needs when it comes to VW's Laughing It's about wants and perceived needs Smile

Well, now my Corolla is totaled. An 18 year old girl ran into the side of it as I was trying to leave the Wal-Mart parking lot last week. It was a low speed impact but it hit just in the right spot to total it, based on it being a 1991. She hit the A-pillar on the passenger side front door and smashed up the door. $2800 repair quote is what i ended up with. Waiting for insurance to send someone out to look at it. The girl is hanging up her own insurance company when they try to contact her, according to what her own insurance company told me on the phone.

99% sure I am going to (try to) buy a classic autostick beetle. I just listed my vintage camper for sale on CraigsList. The dilemma I had about what vehicle to buy was hinging on the fact that I have the camper and would want to haul it somewhere if I keep it. If I can sell it, I won't have any need for a fuel guzzling tow vehicle. I will be keeping my old Corolla since it's still a good daily driver even if it has a smashed in passenger side door since the other 3 doors still open and the car drives okay. I can buy a car of the same type for $1500 unwrecked which I may also do and use this old one for parts.

Since I have a nice garage to house a classic beetle inside of now and will have the dough to buy one, there will be no better time to buy one. There is a decent looking one over near Dallas for under $3k right now.
